Help Us to Save More Lives

In Nicaragua

Your donation will help a child in trouble….

Dear Visitor to Nicaragua,

Last week we received bad news from our non-profit health clinic near Tola, Nicaragua. Dr. Flores helped deliver a premature newborn last week. The baby was 26 weeks old and the mother’s health was not the best. She was scared and nervous. Her son needed neonatal intensive care. Unfortunately, our clinic was not equipped to deal with the baby’s immediate need for special care, and the lack of an ambulance for prompt transport to another clinic only made things worse. Our team, Dr. Flores and the nurses, managed to transfer the woman and the baby to the main hospital in Rivas, 45 minutes away, but the baby didn’t survive. At the Roberto Clemente Santa Ana Health Clinic we try our
best to save lives and improve the quality of health in this remote community. But sometimes we find ourselves too short on resources.

Staffed by the ever-patient and caring Dr. Julio Flores and nurses Martha Miranda and Carlos Peña, the clinic supplies free and low-cost medical care to the isolated villages of Limon, Rancho Santana and
41 surrounding communities in southwest  Nicaragua.

The good news is that since the clinic opened in the summer of 2004, the team has saved more than 20 lives with triage care, delivered 4 healthy babies, helped thousand of residents prevent infections, educated the community on preventative health care, and responded quickly to local emergencies effecting hundreds of local workers and families.

You can participate in our campaign to acquire an ambulance for the clinic. We are raising funds to purchase a simple SUV that can be converted into an ambulance. The case of the infant we were unable to save shows how important it is to have emergency medical transport service in the community. Had an ambulance been available, perhaps that life could have been saved.

The full cost of this vehicle is approximately $30,000, but we only need to raise 50% of the funds. The other 50% will be matched by Agora Inc.

To reach this goal we will need 15 people to donate $1,000 each or 30 donations of $500.

DOUBLE THE IMPACT!
Your donations will qualify for a 2007 tax deduction - and 100% matching funds from Agora, Inc., so your donation will go twice as far!

Respiratory ailments are common in this part of Nicaragua... dust from unpaved roads and pesticides from crops contribute to chronic conditions that affect children and adults alike.

Your donation will help to provide an ever increasing array of services to the locals and visitors of the region:

  • We are now open every day, with services available on a 24-hour/7-days-a-week basis (up from nine hours a day, 3-5 days/week last year).

  • Just one year ago, the Clinic served the two local villages of Limón I and Limón II. Now, the people of 48 area villages up and down the Nicaragua's Pacific coast benefit from Clinic services, as well as tourists, employees and residents of nearby Rancho Santana and other developments.

  • Despite the challenges of muddy, impassable roads, the Clinic record was set when Dr. Flores and his team attended 10,270 patients last year.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. If you have any other ideas about how to help our clinic and the communities it serves please do not hesitate to contact us by sending an email to: jguth@oxfordclub.com or calling my direct line at 410-223-2630.

Very sincerely,
