About the Roberto Clemente Rancho Santana Clinic FAQ

Are my donations tax deductible? Are matching funds available? Where do the donations go?

All donations are 100% federal tax-deductible to US citizens.

Agora Publishing has generously offered to match 100% all donations - dollar for dollar – for the balance each year. Our largest donation to date has come from the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh.

Many private employers also match charitable donations. Please check with your employer’s Human Resources office to see if your donation to the Clinic may qualify for matching funds.

100% of all donations and matching funds go to the construction, maintenance and operation of the clinic. This includes the purchase of equipment and supplies, telecommunications costs, lab work, and the extremely modest salaries of the staff.  To donate funds, call Julia Guth at (410) 223-2630, or click here for the donor application.

What is Nicaragua like?

Known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, and is located just north of Costa Rica.  It is a beautiful country, with a stunning Pacific coastline, and abundant agricultural resources. Nicaragua is also known for its handmade leather products and exceptional pottery.

Nicaragua is one of the poorest Latin American countries. It has been ravaged by decades of civil war, political and social instability, lack of access to education and health care, and natural disasters.

Today, Nicaragua is attracting worldwide attention. Improvements in infrastructure, greater political stability, and a tough stand on corruption have led to increased foreign investment and tourism.

The country’s greatest resource is its people. The culture is unique, and Nicaraguans are among the warmest and most resilient people you’ll find anywhere.

Who was Roberto Clemente?

Roberto Clemente (1934-1972) was a star right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972. He won four National League batting titles, twelve Golden Glove awards, and was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1966.

Fiercely proud of his heritage, he demanded more respect for Hispanic players throughout his career. His lifelong dream was to build a youth sports facility in Puerto Rico for poor children.

In 1972, while helping to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua, his plane went down off the coast of Puerto Rico. He is considered a national hero in Nicaragua.
