Dear Padrino,

I would like to thank you for being part of this spectacular program. You cannot believe the impact that your contribution is having on this group of children. Sometimes the promise of new uniforms and free health care sounds impossible,  but “YOU” made their dreams come true. The kids were extremely happy and proud to wear their new uniforms. New shoes,,, whauuu… We put the two pictures (before and after) so you can see the real impact of your contribution.

Here is the first list of kids and a little thank you from them. If your “ahijado”(godchild) is not in the picture, it is because their uniform is still being made or is scheduled to arrive next week.

If you think that one of your friends or family members could be interested in being part of this program please forward this email and explain them a little bit about it or they can click in the link below for more information.

Dear Friend of the Nicaraguan Community

Dear Friend of the Nicaraguan Community,

I have great news to share with you today!!

Our 10th baby and the first boy - Jorge Eduardo Montoya - was recently born at the Clinic.

The parents were grateful they had somewhere clean and safe to go to give birth. It isn’t always easy.  Flooding from the rainy season, dusty bumpy roads in the dry season, and a 45-minute ride to the nearest hospital make it difficult.

And during pregnancy, mothers in the region can suffer from various ailments.  Respiratory problems are most prevalent, from dusty roads and pesticides from crops. There are also gastrointestinal illnesses from the lack of potable water, and lack of good nutrition.

Dr. Flores and his clinic team work hard to make the examinations, emergency care and preventative treatments as modern and effective as possible. But they still lack equipment…equipment we take for granted, like a good sonogram machine, and more space and privacy for the patients with expanded examination rooms.  These are just two of our top goals for 2011. That's why I’m writing you today.

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

In 2008, Janet Foerster and Dave Sevick worked together on a project that brought 10 refurbished computers to a small school in Nicaragua.

In early November, Foerster and Edgar Largaespada set up two of those computers for a health fair at the Roberto Clemente clinic in Tola, where Melissa Castillo, 10, sat with her mother, sister Diana, 2, and 12 other patients as they waited to see a doctor.

Largaespada walked past with an iMac on his shoulder. Diana climbed down from her seat and followed him.

Diana sat on the floor next to Largaespada as he tinkered with the keyboard. Melissa came to retrieve her sister, but lingered over Largaespada's shoulder, stealing glances at the screen.

A doctor asked Melissa if she'd like to try the computer. She walked over to her mother and whispered in her ear. Her mother nodded.

Melissa took a seat in front of the computer as Largaespada gave instructions in Spanish. The girl reached out to touch the screen. Largaespada smiled, took her hand and placed it on the mouse.

He asked Melissa if she had family living abroad. Yes, she said, an aunt in Miami. He put his hand over hers and used the mouse to spin a virtual globe. Melissa leaned forward and pursed her lips as the shape of Florida came to rest at the center of the map.

"We're witnessing the first time she's ever used a computer," Largaespada said.
